There’s always more releases than I’m sharing, but these look interesting to me…. all heading out on December 4, 2020.
Lee Morgan – The Sidewinder – Blue Note Records
Recorded at Van Gelder Studio in 1963, The Sidewinder by jazz trumpeter Lee Morgan was a runaway hit that reached No. 25 on the Billboard chart. The title track, now a jazz standard, is one of the most influential recordings in soul jazz. All five tracks were written by Morgan and the album features respected tenor saxophonist, Joe Henderson. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Reissue Series edition is 180-gram all-analog, mastered from the original tapes.
McCoy Tyner – The Real McCoy – Blue Note Records
In 1967, pianist McCoy Tyner was ready for a new start, leaving seminal John Coltrane Quartet and Impulse! Records two years prior. His Blue Note debut, The Real McCoy, firmly established him as a creative force. Featuring a world class quartet with Joe Henderson (tenor sax), Ron Carter (bass) and Elvin Jones (drums), the album presented “Passion Dance,” “Search for Peace,” and “Blues on the Corner.” This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is 180g all-analog, mastered from the original tapes.
Billy Lee Riley – Red Hot – Charly Records
This is a Sun Rockabilly Legends Series coming on colored, 10″ vinyl featuring Arkansas native Billy Lee Riley. Riley not only enjoyed his own recording career but also played in the house band for a spell at Sun Records. I really like his version of “St. James Infirmary” but he is best known for the title cut to this release, “Red Hot.”
Norman Feels – Where or When – Tidal Waves Music
This is true 70’s soul where the synthesizer had taken a larger role at the detriment of the guitar, bass and hammond organ but on this release it is done tastefully and isn’t overbearing. This drops in 180g vinyl edition at only 500 copies and is packaged in a gatefold jacket complete with the original 1973 artwork, photographs and lyrics.
Freddie Terrell And The Soul Expedition – self-titled – P-Vine Records
Deep funk on this one and they do it well. Band is led by Terrell’s guitar but the rest of the band take no back seats here. If you like Funk, this is the real deal.
