The Horace Silver Quintet – Song For My Father

Horace Silver – Song For My Father – Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series – 1965 – REISSUE

This is a Blue Note Classic Vinyl re-release of Shorter’s 1965 Hard Bop release Song For My Father. The release was recorded over a two year period at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey and includes multiple quintet lineups with two tracks including only a trio. This would be the next best version of this album if you can’t find the Music Matters version (MMBST-84185).

Jeff Tweedy – Love Is King

Jeff Tweedy – Love Is The King – Dbpm Records – 2021

The vinyl version of Tweedy’s Love Is King follows the digital release and is meant to be a companion to Tweedy’s book How To Write One Song. This is a pretty mellow release which includes Tweedy’s son Spencer on drums and son Sammy adds some vocals.

Martin Rude & Jakob Skott – The Dichotomy of Control

Martin Rude & Jakob Skott – The Dichotomy of Control – El Paraiso Records – 2021

An instrumental collaboration between Danish musicians Martin Rude and Jakob Skott… Rudes on guitar and Skott adds everything else. There’s a lot to unpack in this release and I hear something different with each take. From jazz to middle eastern influences to almost a Ry Cooder bluesy vibe at times. It does get a bit experimental at times with synth sounds and technical noises but never overwhelming. Everything finds it place in the songs. I like this release more each time I listen.

Shame – Drunk Tank Pink

Shame – Drunk Tank Pink – Dead Oceans Records – 2021

Shame is a group of South London punkers who found themselves tired of the same cycles. That’s not saying they wanted to leave themselves behind but this time around they brought a bit more pop to the studio. The punk attitude is still there but this is really a slick release!

Robohands – Shapes

Robohands – Shapes – King Underground Records – 2021

This is the third album from another London-based act. This time it’s a meld of jazz, funk and beyond recorded at Buffalo Studios in Limehouse, London. Robohands is really just Andy Baxter but saying just seems to settle and this album doesn’t settle. There’s a lot layered in here and the end result is a mellow adventure that keeps you locked in.

Tony Fruscella – Tony Fruscella – Music on Vinyl – 1955 – REISSUE

This is a reissue of Fruscella’s self-titled 1955 release on Music on Vinyl. Fruscella is a cool jazz trumpeter kind of like Chet Baker. His career was cut short and limited due to his addictions but he did work as a sideman for Charlie Barnet, Lester Young, Gerry Mulligan and Stan Getz. This album is his only official release and it was also released as I’ll Be Seeing You. Now, there are mixed reviews of Music on Vinyl releases but in this case, it is your only option so it is likely the best version of this album that you will find.
